The North Canterbury Deerstalkers Association began in July 1949 when at a public meeting it was decided to form a branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association, based in North Canterbury. On 17th July 1958, the branch became incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act.
Today, we are one of the largest branches, with about 300 members, a part of a national organisation of approximately 7,000 members with over 50 branches spread from Northland to Southland. The goal of NZDA is to promote and regulate the sport of big game hunting in New Zealand.
Our own hunting lodge in the Lewis Pass is called Palmer Lodge. It sleeps 21 and has an excellent fire as well as kitchen and dining room facilities. You need to take your own cooking and other gear now due to thefts etc The Lodge is a good base for hunting all of the Lewis Pass area, including the Maruia / Rahu Saddle area. There is a small fee for the use of the lodge.
